Performance Exhaust Systems

Titanium vs Stainless Steel Exhaust

Both materials are built here, on the same fixtures. The comparison is about which specification a program should carry.

Every family in the range is built in SS304 stainless steel, and the performance families are also built in titanium. Buyers setting a material policy for a program ask the same question in the same words — titanium or stainless? — answered on the grounds the workshop works on: how each material is built, finished, handled and priced into a program. Both are produced here, on the same fixtures, to the same checks; the choice is a specification choice, not a quality ladder with a wrong answer.

The Materials Side by Side

The table compares the two as production materials in this range. Weight is described relatively — titanium systems are the lighter construction for the same application — because the honest comparison is between two builds of the same part, not a universal figure.

How the Decision Usually Gets Made

Programs decide by the car's position in the range. Volume applications — the BMW, Volkswagen Group and similar lines a wholesaler stocks deep — are usually specified in stainless, where the finish options and the price point suit the volume. Flagship applications — the supercar lines, the halo car in a brand's catalogue — are specified in titanium, where the material is part of what the end customer is buying.

Mixed policies are common and are easy to run here because the fixtures are shared: the same application can be quoted in both materials on one inquiry, and many programs launch in stainless and add the titanium version once the application proves itself.

Care and Finishing Notes

Stainless finishes are maintained as metal finishes are: brushed surfaces keep their grain, polished surfaces take ordinary metal care, ceramic coating is the low-attention option. Titanium's burnt blue is a heat colour in the metal's surface; it is stable in service and is the finish the material is known for, and programs that choose titanium usually choose the colour with it.

Whichever material a program carries, the sample approval covers it in that material: approve the titanium sample for the titanium program, not a stainless stand-in.

The comparison also runs the other way for the workshop: because the fixtures, flange programs and checks are shared, a material change on an existing application is a specification change, not a development project. A program can therefore treat the material decision as reversible in a way most manufacturing decisions are not — launch in one material, add the other when the application earns it, and hold both to the same documented specification in between. The blog post on exhaust materials works through the catalogue consequences of that reversibility in full.
