B58 Downpipe

One engine, three variants: the B58 front section in catted, catless and titanium specification.

The B58 downpipe is the front section for BMW's turbocharged straight-six, the engine in the 340i, 440i and 540i and the related Supra application. It is one of the two engines the downpipe family is ordered for most, and its variants show the whole family's logic on a single engine: a catted version with a 200-cell high-flow catalyst section, a catless version built as a straight-through pipe, and both in titanium as well as SS304.

Every version is built on the B58 fixture: flange face to the turbo outlet, routing taken from the scanned original part, sensor bosses in the original positions. What changes between variants is the specification inside the pipe and the material it is made from — never the fitment.

The Three B58 Variants

The catted B58 downpipe integrates a 200-cell high-flow catalyst section into an SS304 pipe. It is the variant ordered when the finished car keeps a catalyst in the front section, in a freer-flowing pipe than the factory piece. Heat shield options follow the application, in single and double-layer form.

The catless B58 downpipe is the same routing without the catalyst section: a straight-through pipe from the turbo flange to the mid-pipe joint. Related engine codes in the same fixture family — N55, S55, S63 and B48 downpipes — are built to the same pattern on their own fixtures and are confirmed under the same inquiry.

The titanium B58 downpipe keeps the routing and the layout options and changes the material, with argon-shielded welds and the burnt-blue finish. It is specified where the program's material policy is titanium from the front of the car back.

Fitment: The Cars Behind the Engine Code

The B58 sits in the F and G generation cars: 340i, 440i and 540i are the documented applications, and the engine's other home, the Toyota Supra, is a fitment reference in the same family — car names are used here strictly as fitment references for the part, never as anything else. Chassis generation matters to the routing, which is why the inquiry asks for the chassis code alongside the engine code.

If your program covers the neighbouring BMW engines, one inquiry can carry the whole list: B48, N55, S55 and S63 downpipes are production items in the same family, each on its own fixture, and the reply prices the list engine by engine.

Flanges, Bosses and Joints on the B58 Pipe

The turbo-side flange is machined flat after welding so the joint seals on its gasket. Sensor bosses are placed from the scanned positions of the original part — the pipe accepts the car's existing sensors in their existing locations. The rear joint follows the application: V-band where the car uses it, flange where it does not.

These details are dull and decisive in equal measure. A downpipe is a short part with four interfaces — turbo, sensors, mid-pipe and its mounts — and the fixture exists so that all four are right on every pipe, which is what the dimensional and leak checks verify before packing.

Ordering the B58 Downpipe

Specify the chassis, the variant, the size class where your application has a choice, the material and the finish. The reply confirms the fixture and the variant's specification for your chassis, and quotes. Sample pipes are available for fitment approval before a program commits — one pipe, on your car, checked against your own standard.
